They all wrote children's picture books!
Many people don't realize some of the great authors of adult fiction and poetry have also written picture books. (We also wrote an earlier blog about children's picture books by Maya Angelou and one that featured Fairy Tales by E.E. Cummings!) Following are three picture books by James Joyce, Sylvia Plath, and Langston Hughes...
JAMES JOYCE
Here's one by James Joyce called The Cats of Copenhagen! The story is taken from a letter James Joyce wrote to his grandson. He says there are no cats there, but there's something fishy about that story!
(This might be hard to find these days. I think the cats bought up all the copies and are hiding them!)
SYLVIA PLATH
Collected Children's Stories by Sylvia Plath includes these three stories: The Bed Book, Mrs Cherry's Kitchen and The It-Doesn't-Matter Suit.
My favorite is The Bed Book! It has a snack bed with a pillow of bread and an elephant bed and a hammock bed, flying beds and more fun beds than you can imagine!
LANGSTON HUGHES
Langston Hughes teaches all about music and instruments in The First Book of Jazz, which originally included a CD!
(This one may be hard to find, but you might find a used copy and you can also click here to read about the CD and download the recordings for free!)
Happy reading, friends! (:3
