As a child, my mother always read to me traditional books with moral lessons and never told me that I had to read anything specific according to a test, my given age, or reading level. Instead, she encouraged me to read anything I found interesting and fun and told me that reading was about having fun!
As I grew up, I always had my nose in a book, as she would say; and I was always winning reading contests at my school. I loved reading! I would try to read at least three books a week when I was ten and when I was eleven years old, I began journaling and writing stories. By the summer, I had written my first novel between sixth grade and seventh.
Now, I believe that I am a published author because of my mother’s encouragement of my love for reading, as well as the impact those books made on me as child. I believe that reading is very important as a child because when you read a book, it becomes a part of your soul and helps make you who you are, and your imagination comes alive!
So parents please read to your child every day, whether it be during the day or at bedtime. Encourage your child to read, tell them how much fun reading can be and that reading is about having fun!
